See What Makes us Proud Majors!
Ten Reasons why Mount Vernon High School Stands Out
10 Ways MVHS Shows Its Major Pride!
Academic Achievement
As a school with 24% of our students categorized as multilingual learners, we are proud of our students & staff who reached a 76% pass rate for the state of Virginia reading exams, advancing above the state average for this assessment.
Student Programs
Mount Vernon HS students excel in our extracurricular programs, including athletics, band, orchestra, chorus and performing arts. MVHS has honored and decorated student-athletes, musicians, singers and performers. Our SGA is highly involved in our positive school environment, including spirit days, monthly ethic and cultural celebrations and staff recognitions.
Staff Recognition
MVHS currently has four (4) National Board Certified Teachers for this school year, but has been proud to have several others over the past few years. Our Theatre and Orchestra Teachers have been recognized at the county level and our football coach was the 2023 Division Coach of the Year.
Community Engagement
MVHS works closely with our amazing community to provide diverse opportunities to our students, outside of the opportunities provided to all of FCPS high schools. Recently, MVHS hosted the VACRO College Fair, where 60+ colleges and universities attended. Additionally, MVHS hosted the Steamology STEM Fest (featuring MVHS volunteers/mentors)
School Culture
MVHS boasts a diverse school culture that celebrates all of our students and their background and experiences. MVHS annually celebrates our military families with our Purple Star initiatives, as well as cultural celebrations during the cultural recognition months, as well as planned SGA Spirit activities.
Facilities and Resources
We have an amazing building services staff that keeps an aging facility running at top levels each school year.
College and Career Readiness (High Schools)
Mount Vernon HS proudly serves a wide-array of academic programs, including International Baccalaureate (IB), Dual Enrollment, Governor’s School, FCPS Academies, AVID, and MCJROTC.

Tony Perkins, a Class of 1977 MVHS grad, is a nationally acclaimed stand-up comedian and TV news host.
Finally, Class of 1979 grad Darryl Williams who was on a state championship basketball team during his time here, is now a four-star general.
Student Growth and Progress
MVHS students have overcome a wide array of barriers to student success, and have worked closely with dedicated staff to reach full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education this past school year.
