Mount Vernon High School Library Media Center Collection Development Policy

Mount Vernon High School is an accredited High School in Fairfax County, Virginia with a diverse population of approximately 2000 students. MVHS is an International Baccalaureate school that also offers other programing for English Language Learners, Special Education, JROTC, Career and Technical Education, and Dual-Enrollment.

The Mount Vernon High School library staff strives to provide a student-centered library program that fosters competencies in finding and using information in a global society. 

Material selected for the collection shall enrich and support Fairfax County Public School’s program of studies, Virginia Standards of Learning, and the International Baccalaureate curriculum. The collection shall also contain materials that support informational and recreational reading, viewing, and listening to assist students in developing skills necessary to become lifelong learners. 

Selection of materials shall occur regularly throughout the school year for timeliness and currency of subjects, and in conjunction with feedback from faculty, students, and professional reviews. 

The current collection needs, along with existing collection are used to consider selection of new materials at Mount Vernon High School Library. Professional reviews, and evaluation by librarians regarding readability, curricular relevance, authority, accuracy, organization, and general readability. A variety of formats shall be included (ex: ebooks).

The collection shall be evaluated and assessed to ensure it continues to meet policy guidelines. Collection analysis data shall be used, in addition to a recurring inventory cycle of three years. Items shall be regularly weeded based on the criteria outlined by policy (poor physical condition, outdated or obsolete information, limited educational value, and low circulation statistics.) When practical and feasible, damaged materials may be repaired or replaced. 

Basal program, supplementary, or library materials may be challenged by any individual residing in Fairfax County or Fairfax City, a parent or guardian of a student in FCPS, or an employee of Fairfax County Public Schools. In the event of a challenge of any item in the Mount Vernon High School Library collection, FCPS Regulation 3009.10 will be followed. If a potential challenge arises at the school, the librarian should inform the Library Information Services Coordinator.
