Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), is a program designed for students with recognized academic potential, an individual determination to succeed, and a desire to take challenging courses that lead to four-year college enrollment.
AVID students are learners who:
- have a goal of attending a four-year college;
- are motivated and determined to succeed in school;
- have a GPA of 2.5 or higher;
- want to push themselves into Honors, AP, IB or Dual-Enrollment (DE) classes
What do we do in the AVID elective class?
- WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading)
These skills are necessary to be successful in honors and IB classes, and eventually in college.
- Tutorials
Twice a week, students work with professional adult tutors and their peers on collaborative inquiry. Discussions are focused on questioning the topics they are learning in their other classes.
- Organization
Students utilize an AVID binder system, a school agenda and a focused note-taking system.
- College/Career Planning
AVID students benefit from college and career research activities, field trips and guest speakers.
- Challenge students about who they are!
One of the most important parts of AVID is helping students learn about themselves and make proper choices in life. Many of the AVID class activities, although academic in nature, often force students to reflect on who they are and who they want to become. Pointing students towards their own path to success is always our goal.
