Mount Vernon High School was established in 1939. From 1940 to 1973, classes were held in the original Mount Vernon building located on Route 1. The school's current location opened in 1961 as the original Walt Whitman Intermediate School. Whitman and Mount Vernon swapped campuses in 1973.
