Mount Vernon High School was well represented during the Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held from March 17th through 19th at Robinson Secondary School. Twenty-two projects were sent to the regional fair out of the 189 total projects that were reviewed during the annual Science Fair held at MVHS in late January and early February.

Any student in an International Baccalaureate (IB) or Honors level science class was required to participate but any interested student was eligible to submit a project for review. Completed projects and associated presentations account for 10% of students’ final grade for science courses which required participation.

Teacher co-sponsors Anna Gosling and Cory Smith were impressed by the number of underclassmen submissions and they believe the renewed emphasis shared by their fellow teachers was a primary reason for the increase. Both noted they recall seeing their biology colleagues spending more time with students after school to assist with project development and to address questions. In each case, Gosling and Smith believe the increased participation will better prepare for future projects in classes and during IB assessments.
