Two Mount Vernon High students and a student from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) were among the winners in the 2020 Martin Luther King, Jr., essay contest, sponsored by Ventures in Community. Obinna Ekeagwu of Mount Vernon High was named first place winner, Turner Bumbary of TJHSST won second place, and Victoria Laffittee of Mount Vernon High captured the third place award.  Essays were based on the theme, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way,” a quote by King. The students were recognized at a tribute to King at Bethlehem Baptist Church earlier this month. Ventures in Community is a local coalition of faith-based and nonprofit organizations that support a hypothermia center and local network on poverty. More information about the essay winners and the ceremony are available on the Mount Vernon Gazette website.  Contact the FCPS Office of Communication and Community Relations at 571-423-1200.
