Twelfth grade bassist Owen Chong has been selected to represent Mount Vernon High at the Northern Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra. This orchestra showcases the best young orchestral musicians in Fairfax County Public Schools. A total of 95 string musicians were selected for this year’s ensemble out of hundreds of auditionees.

Chong is the first Mount Vernon High student in recent history to achieve such an honor. Previously, he has served as section bassist and assistant principal bassist of the District 10 Honors Orchestra during his sophomore and junior years and principal of the Junior District Orchestra during his freshman year.

Chong will be participating in an orchestra event at Fairfax High November 7-9 and will be performing Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances in concert November 9, under the baton of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Daniel Myssyk.  Students selected for the regional orchestra ensemble are qualified to audition for the All-Virginia Orchestra in February 2020. Alberto Rodriguez directs the Mount Vernon High Orchestra.
