Distance Learning Instructional Structure

What is asynchronous learning?

Asynchronous Learning

Online or distance learning which occurs without any real-time interaction. Your time, your place, your schedule is the norm for this type of instructional model for learning.

Advantages to consider:

  • Flexibility for all participants (Students & Teachers)
  • Students determine their own course pacing
  • Less obstacles with social issues
  • Multiple forms of media encouraged to support learning of content objectives
  • Student centered model for learning

What is synchronous learning?

Synchronous Learning

Online or distance learning which occurs in real-time. Resembles our traditional face to face model except technology connects everyone in a specific virtual classroom at the specific time.

Advantages to consider:

  • Designated time to meet with everyone
  • Real-time engagement and collaboration options for students
  • Opportunity to immediately address concerns and provide feedback
  • Provides immediate sense of community since all participants are together in one space

Assessment Updates

State and county mandated assessments

Assessments such as WorkKeys, WIDA, and SOLs are currently scheduled to occur this year. However, the county will be determining how these assessments are administered depending on the FCPS operational status.

The PSAT will be held on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. Registration information will be communicated soon. This test will be offered to juniors only, but sophomores will have an opportunity to test in the spring. This assessment test is scheduled to be completed in the school building on the above date.

We will be following county procedures and safety protocols when assessments are scheduled in the building to ensure physical distancing and appropriate cleaning practices.

SAT and ACT Testing at Mount Vernon High School

Mount Vernon will continue to host weekend testing opportunities for the SAT and ACT during the 2020-21 school year.  We are scheduled to administer the ACT on October 10th and 24th, 2020.  The SAT test administration will be completed on October 3rd and November 7th, 2020.

"Go Paperless" Report Card Option

Did you know that you have the option to "go paperless" and receive only online report cards?

Your selection of the paperless option in your SIS ParentVue account will only impact how you receive report cards from MVHS. No other FCPS mailings and/or required documentation will be affected by this selection.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into SIS ParentVUE, go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless"  All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed report cards. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level.
